What to check before you buy any Windows hosting
Six questions worth asking any provider, including us. If a host cannot answer all six in writing, that tells you something on its own.
Which .NET runtime is installed?
.NET Framework and modern .NET are not the same thing, and an application built for one will not run on the other. Ask which specific versions are available, and whether more than one can run side by side.
Which database, and what size?
MSSQL and MySQL are not interchangeable. If your application uses MSSQL, ask which edition, what the maximum database size is, and whether you can connect remotely with SQL Server Management Studio.
Which control panel?
Plesk manages Windows and Linux. cPanel is Linux only. If a page mentions both, ask which one your account actually gets and whether the panel costs extra on top of the plan price.
Which web server?
IIS serves ASP.NET applications. Apache, NGINX and LiteSpeed serve PHP. If a plan lists LiteSpeed and you need IIS, the plan is not going to run your application no matter what the page headline says.
What does the refund actually cover?
Check the guarantee period on the plan itself, not the banner. Then check what happens if you discover a platform mismatch on day fifteen, because that is exactly when most .NET deployments hit trouble.
Can you get it in writing?

Plesk and cPanel, and why the difference matters
cPanel runs on Linux only. Plesk runs on both Windows and Linux, which is why Windows hosting is usually managed through Plesk. They do broadly the same job, but the panel tells you a lot about what is underneath: if an account is managed through cPanel, it is a Linux account, and a Linux account cannot run ASP.NET.

If your site is WordPress, Laravel or plain PHP, you do not. Linux will be cheaper and faster, and we will say so.
ASP.NET applications
Files ending in .aspx or .cshtml, a .csproj or .sln in the project. Built on the .NET Framework or modern .NET, it needs IIS on Windows Server.
MSSQL databases
Your data lives in SQL Server and your team connects with SQL Server Management Studio. MySQL is not a drop in replacement.
Classic ASP and legacy apps
Older classic ASP systems and some Microsoft Access setups that still run the business and will not be rewritten this year.
Hybrid WordPress plus .NET

Windows hosting runs on Microsoft Windows Server rather than Linux. It exists because some applications will only run there: anything built on ASP.NET or the .NET Framework, anything using MSSQL Server, classic ASP, and some Microsoft Access setups. It is normally managed through the Plesk control panel, because cPanel is Linux only. If your site is WordPress, Laravel or plain PHP, you do not need Windows hosting and Linux will be cheaper and faster.
Look at what your developer built it in. If the files end in .aspx or .cshtml, if the project has a .csproj or .sln file, or if your database is MSSQL, you need Windows. If it is PHP with a MySQL database, you do not. If you are unsure, send us a screenshot of your project folder or your current hosting panel and we will tell you which one you need, at no charge and with no obligation to buy.
